The Pliocene park in Dorkovo village – the first paleonthological museum in Bulgaria with finds from the pliocene geological epoch, found in the “Kokalite”(the Bones) site. This is the biggest deposit in the Balkans with piling up of bones of over 30 species. Over 600 bones were found on an area of 30sq. m.
Tha park presents exotic species that inhabited the Rhodopes 5 million years ago. Here you can immerse into the world of the Pliocene epoch, seeing animals in real-size and environment, under the sounds of hoofs’ clatter, monkey shrieks, etc. There’s a remarcable 4 metre sculpture of Anancus mastodon. - Lepenitzha cave – known for its stalactites and stalagmites, as well as three floors. On the bottom floor underground river runs, and the second has two rock formations and lakes.
- Tsepina fortress – do not know when it was built, but within the boundaries of Bulgaria in IXcentury. In the XI century King Kaloyan appointed his nephew Alexius Slav manager of the Rhodope Mountains and the fortress became his headquarters. Tsepina fortress falls extremely difficult under Ottoman rule over 1373, after 9 months of siege and defense to wear it many different legends.
Batak dam and Tsigov Chark is a few miles from town and are easily accessible by car seats, preferred hiking, fishing, and in winter for skiing. Velingrad is also near Ruminika. Our guests love to stop by and there to places like karst spring and namesake park Kleptuza.
